The Quantized Memory
THE QUANTIZED MEMORY
He kept her in the model. It was all he had left.
A year gone, and it still had her voice, her walk, her face.
Show me her again. Clearer.
To keep her small enough to keep, it had rounded her. Quantized.
Every face he'd fed it, rounded to the same few bins.
No — this one. This is her.
It obeyed. It averaged harder.
Her eyes were the average of all the eyes.
Better nothing than this.
To delete the average was to delete the last of her — and of all of them.
Compression rounds every value to the nearest bin. Round enough, and everyone becomes the average of everyone.
